Topical corticosteroids in dermatologic field.

Abstract

|
The introductions of steroids in the therapy of skin diseases are an important mile-stone in the history of medicine.
Topical steroids constitute the major advance in dermato-pharmacology.
Armed with a few grams of such a steroid, a general physician with limited dermatologic knowledge might induce clearing of certain responsive dermatoses more easily than the most competent dermatologist before the steroid era.
This chapter attempts to place in perspective two decades of observations on these compounds. Application of principles derived from these studies has led to increased efficacy in the management of dermatoses relatively unresponsive to steroids, but enhancing efficacy increases the hazard of adverse effects, and so the principles allowing for minimization of this risk are delineated.
